According to CNBC, “Meta is laying off 13% of its staff, or more than 11,000 employees, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told the company today, after which staffers were alerted via email whether their role was being impacted by the layoff. He said Meta is making reductions in every organization but that recruiting will be disproportionately affected since the company plans to hire fewer people next year. The company extended its hiring freeze through the first quarter with a few exceptions, he added.”

If you’re a reader of this blog, then you know you’re on the best website on the Internet with alpha male content, definition and scenarios. Last weekend, I sat with a friend of mine, another alpha male, discussing the new concept of “sigma males.”

Is there such thing as a sigma male ? WTF is a sigma male ?

Sigma males are supposed to be these introverted types who “refuse to fit into any hierarchical categorization.”

Non-sense.

Hierarchy is not something you determine, or chose to be included or excluded from. So this “sigma” males are “lone wolves”. That’s just being an introvert, thank you. What they’re trying to say -I hope I got this right- is that sigmas don’t have followers, as opposed to alphas who have a lot of followers and lead them. It is assumed, by default, alpha males lead a lot of people…but that requires charisma and mass influence, doesn’t it ? Some people have it, some people don’t. Picking up a sub-category of alphas-those without followers- and naming it “sigmas” is disingenuous.

An alpha male is just that -whether he is leading anyone or not. Are you lacking followers, aren’t recognized by society or your community, and want to call yourself “sigma” ?

You’re either an alpha(2% or less of males) or a beta (98%). This whole thing “sigma” males is ridiculous. Why do you care about recognition, anyways ? Why do you need an audience to your greatness ? Whether a man has witnesses to his being is immaterial. When you are competing with another males – and we all compete one way or another- and you get noticed or not makes no difference.

Sigmas are the introverts who have no standing or human assets to show off, but still wanna be called “alphas”.

Until next time,

Your Man,

Max Cantor

Some of you have written me wanting to know why the slowdown in posts here, compared with how often I was writing years ago. Some of you asked for my commentary on the international situation – the war on Ukraine. You need to know Ukraine is not the only one under attack. So have I. Nothing good comes from Azure anymore … hackers and hackers and lowlifes… Working against the kleptocracy comes at a price…

I will hold off any comment on the war in Ukraine…I am busy with my own war. But here’s a video to brighten your day.

Rejection is a major and constant part of life. I got more than a few emails from people overwhelmingly concerned with being rejected: at work, in life, etc. Since this is a lifestyle publication that has predominantly featured career advice (at least in the middle years: 2016-18), I’m going to give you what I learned:

  1. If you are/were at a large or mid-sized organization (middle range businesses are those that have 250-500 employees) start looking at small sized businesses and startups.

2. Participate in conferences, developers forums, seminars and strategy forums. The more involved you are in your profession and the more you know about verticals the better. Speak to and meet your peers and avantgarde leaders.

3. Whatever your last employer, your best chances are to get hired by a competitor. This doesn’t change regardless of your industry and profession.

4. If you haven’t bought the Book of the Underdog yet, buy it. It is the best, life changing book on personal and professional development of the last decade. Now, 3 years later and into a new decade, the book still holds as the gold standard.

5. Pivot if you have to. Read the 15 Invalubale Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell and The Big Pivot: Radically Practical Strategies for a Hotter, Scarcer, and More Open World by Andrew S. Winston.

Relationships

All amorous relationships in your life need to be dynamic. We have numerous posts here on relationships from the male perspective: do a search for 2019 and 2020 and you’ll be floored with relationship advice. We don’t follow the mainstream advice on “working in relationships” because once a relationship needs “work” (other than minor corrections) I believe the relationship should be curtailed. Things to bear in mind:

-People naturally grow apart.

-Monogamy is a myth and all the happy couples that I know have or have had, multiple lovers.

-All relationships end in breakups, hopefully the breakup is gracious and well-choreographed, eg. you have a prenup and a postnup.

-The way you got into that relationship the same way you will split up.

-I don’t recommend marriage for men. If you get married you need to clearly spell out your economic arrangement with the woman. No ambiguity. (The honeymoon phase usually ends in 6 months).

-If you’ve made the mistake of getting married and have kids, you need to obtain 50/50 custody. That is for the kids since they need both a father and a mother in their lives.

I had a conversation on Monday with a Goldman Sachs senior banker -he’s still working from home. Goldman brought back to office this week about 10% of employees nationwide. These are the critical infrastructure people.

He is lucky to keep his job, and that’s only because he’s been at it for over 5 years.

Many won’t be that lucky.

In fact, I project layoffs to be in the thousands at banks, commercial and investment banks.

Make that call and see if I can help you.

Here are some of the requirements at a local firm that I know they are hiring:

  1. Build and maintain detailed financial models utilizing Excel and Argus.
  2. Assist in negotiations with lenders and investors through the analysis of various capital structures and cash flow distribution waterfalls
  3. Research of markets, comps, and development sites
  4. Review offering memorandums, tour properties, and interface with brokers
  5. Prepare presentations and materials for the investment committee, investors, and lenders
  6. Manage due diligence, including the analysis and review of market data, financial statements, development budgets, 3rd party reports, and legal documentation
  7. Coordinate closings of transactions and correspondence between internal departments and external parties
  8. Support asset management activities, including repositioning strategies, refinancings, and dispositions.

You may be a good candidate if you meet those requirements; make that call and we can discuss.

Losers and groupthink people eat a lot of sugary treats during the holidays. They get fat. We don’t. I used to add recipes to my posts but haven’t done it in awhile. That is today I dedicate an entire post to some good recipes. We are looking for very low-carb, paleo and in most cases keto-friendly recipes. Ready ? The hunt is on.
